Exclusive interview with Julio Cesar

When Julio Cesar left Brazil and joined Inter in 2005, he was the biggest star of Brazil’s most popular team, Flamengo. His first year and a half in Italy seemed to show that he was not ready to succeed in Europe, but eventually he established himself as Inter’s starting goalkeeper and one of the best players in the world in hisposition.
Cesar was always a Flamengo fan and started his career in the club in 1997. At the time, he was a substitute to Clemer, a more experienced keeper. Eventually, his quick reflexes and amazing saves turned him into the starting goalkeeper, an idol for Flamengo fans and a target for European clubs.

Julio Cesar signed with Internazionale in 2005, and was loaned to Chievo Verona, where he was unable to show the sharp form of his days with Flamengo. The return to Inter saw him sitting on the bench throughout the entire season.

But the next few seasons were enough for Julio Cesar to prove his worth. Roberto Mancini, Inter’s coach at the time, turned him into his starting goalkeeper and Julio Cesar proved he was ready for the task.

At the Selecao, the goalkeeper was the third option for Carlos Alberto Parreira in the 2006 World Cup. Dunga, however, transformed him into the starting goalkeeper and he answered the call with great performances.

Now, he is the Selecao’s number one choice, and is a sure pick as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

We have been lucky enough here at blog.great-save.com to have this special interview with the great man we hope you enjoy this A&Q.

Q – You played an incredible last season in Italy, becoming the winner of the Italian Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League! What would you say, how much does your goalkeeper gloves contribute to your success?

It has been an extraordinary, terrific season. Our team has won everything that could have been won. We worked hard, of course, but it was worth it. The feelings and emotions I experienced with all these victories will always be kept in mind. As for the gloves, they are my working tools on which I always have to be able to rely on.
Q -  Furthermore you have got the award for the 2010 UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year. What does this great honor mean to you and your career?

It has been a great honour! We have won on the field first and then I’ve been awarded once more. I’m really happy!

Q -  What do you expect from a good goalkeeper glove and what special features does it need to provide?
Júlio: It must have a good fit, the right palm material and a good look. This is what matters to me but I want also to trust in the product as during the match I have to concentrate on several other things. Reusch helps me a lot with that. Since our co-operation has started, each product they have created has always exceeded the previous one in quality and look. It’s evident that the people involved in the process do their best and never stop.

Q – You are one of the world’s best goalkeepers. How did this change your life?

My everyday life is the same. I’m happily married with Susana and we have two beautiful kids, I’m playing in the team of my dreams. Changed? We have won the Champions, too.

Q – Successful professional athletes are frequently called heroes by their fans. What makes you a hero?

Supposing you really want to consider me a hero, I think it’s a matter of controlling one’s emotions, minimizing negative ones like fear and anxiety while encouraging the positive ones like determination, courage and pride.

Q -  What are your recommendations for young goalkeepers, who want to become a star as you are?

I suggest them to train hard, believe in their dream, and trust only people who deserve it and not to become a swollen-head.
