Goalkeeper Discussion – Dealing with big game nerves
6 Comments
It was great to see Southampton boss Nigel Adkins come out and back his goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski after his howler against Blackpool at the weekend.
Much of the chat in the office here today has been about Bialkowski and his weekend nightmare with 2 Southampton fan’s here in the office both have been quick to back Bartoz too.
Adkins has saying in his post match press interviews how good Bartoz had been in training but once in the heat of a big game maybe nerves got the better of him.
In today’s Goalkeeper Discussion we wanted to know has this happened to you? Have you been great in training but once in the heat of a big game totally lost your nerves? For those of you that have how have you overcome big game nerves? We all know many keepers suffer nerves but how do you over come them?

Was doing perfectly alright in training before the match, then all of a sudden just blanked, stood still and they shot one straight past me, didn’t even know it had gone in the back of the net :/
Belive in yourself, calm down, belive that nobody can beat you and keep your head high. Simple as that.
Only ever happened once with me. First game at a new club, early in the first half. The first choice keeper knocked heads with our center half and both of them having to come off injured. Someone should have told him ‘KEEPERS’ means get out of the way!!
I wasn’t warmed up and the substitute defender was a disaster. He managed to play everyone onside by a mile leaving me to deal with relentless attacks that were 3v1 at the worst of times. I gave away a penalty by taking a 1v1 down as he tried to round me, and our striker gave away another soon after with a Suarez style handball on the line.
Bad match that I’d love to forget!
My best technique is to do my warm up listening to some motivating tunes on the MP3, nothing better than getting pumped and having that song in your mind when you are blocking a 1-on-1
I used to suffer from nerves alot. And not only did it effect my game, it affected my confidence too.
But one day instead of focussing on the impending match. I was having a laugh and taking the p*ss out of the lads. Ended up having a blinder. So every game now, even a final or the biggest game of the season I am smiling and laughing and carrying on. Once the game starts I let my instincts and sub conscience take over.
It just goes to prove that thinking is over rated.
Every time before any game on the car ride there i always just put my headphones in and listen to music and block everyone out. i pick a song that i like that day and i just keep singing it up my head. keeps me focused and alert. this also just helps me relax, singing a song that i like in my head is just very calming. just don’t over think anything and just make the simple save even if it includes giving up a corner. hope this helps!
